We have all been brainwashed in regards to calories. A couple of years ago I believed in it too. That losing weight was all about “eating fewer calories than you burn”. That is “eat less and run more”.
Fat people on the other hand, their problem I thought was that they had eaten more calories than they lost. They were a little bit too greedy, a little bit too lazy. They had bad character – which meant that skinny people like me had good character. It felt nice to know that, even if it was prejudiced.
It all seemed obvious and logical. But now more and more people have realized how stupid it is. Soon we’ll all be laughing at how we could fall for such an error in thinking.
The mistake
This can be hard to understand if you’re brainwashed. It takes time, it did for me.
Here is the problem with calorie fixation. It is completely pointless. It sounds logical and smart, but in reality it says zero and nothing.
Typical example:
This sounds believable. But what is it really? Of course a calorie surplus means that you gain weight, that is obvious. It’s so obvious that it’s the same thing. A calorie surplus equals weight gain. When you realize this you will see the mistake:
Pointless. It’s true, but it says nothing of value. It says nothing about the real reasons for obesity.
Other typical statements from calorie fanatics are just as pointless:
Since a calorie deficit is the same thing as weight loss we will soon be able to see through this statement too.
Once again: An obvious and completely unusable claim.
Comedy or Tragedy?
This brainwash would be amusing if it didn’t have such sad consequences. When a person with weight problems asks for help from a calorie expert, this is often what they’re told:
“My dear. There are many theories regarding weight loss, trend diets and other ideas, but it really is very simple. There is only one way. Forget everything else, because there are no shortcuts. It does not matter what you eat. Let me tell you. The only thing you have to focus on if you want to be skinnier… is to lose weight.”
Finally
This is what it would look like if people solved their mathematics problems in school with the same way of thinking as a calorie fanatic:
A little bit too easy. Just like when simple calorie counting is left to explain obesity problems.
The problem is that most people still can’t see that the way that thinking in terms of calories is shouted to the world, is pointless. They are so convinced that the calorie fixation must be true, that they can’t see how little the reasoning really says. The problem is that they are brainwashed.
